Knutsford University was established in 2007 as a University College to address the growing demand for high-quality and affordable university education in Ghana, Africa, and worldwide. Accredited by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) in the same year, Knutsford earned recognition for its exceptional academic facilities, transformative programmes, dedicated staff, effective governance, and conducive learning environment.
The university’s commitment to excellence was further strengthened by its partnerships with renowned institutions. In 2011, Knutsford formed a partnership with the prestigious University of Ghana (UG), allowing for mentorship and the conferment of UG degrees to Knutsford graduates. In 2017, the university expanded its affiliation to include the University for Development Studies in Ghana, further enriching the educational opportunities available to its students.
Since its inception, Knutsford University College has experienced significant growth, starting with just 25 students in 2008 and now serving thousands of students. Strategically situated in the plush East Legon area of Accra, Ghana’s capital city, the university is conveniently located just 10 minutes away from Kotoka International Airport. Additionally, the university has established a second campus in Kumasi, just a 25-minute drive from the regional airport, further expanding its reach and accessibility.
From the outset, Knutsford University has placed a strong emphasis on fostering a vibrant and engaging student life. The university offers a diverse array of student organizations, clubs, and extracurricular activities, ranging from academic and professional societies to sports teams, cultural groups, and community service initiatives. With its newly acquired university status, Knutsford began to diversify its academic portfolio, introducing a range of undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes across various disciplines, including the business administration, communication, humanities, computer sciences, and Arts. This transformation allowed Knutsford to cater to the evolving educational needs of its students and the broader community.
In December 2024, Knutsford University achieved a significant milestone when it was granted a prestigious Presidential Charter, officially elevating it to the status of a comprehensive, research-intensive institution. This recognition, awarded by the Office of the President, solidified Knutsford’s position as a leading center of academic excellence and innovation within the country and the region.
